This has not been my week. Bought a new Kysor/Medallion tachometer from Great Lakes Skipper. Came in Friday. When I took it out of the box I noticed that it was reading 1,000 rpms. They tell me that tachometers come set at different rpms and to hook it to a positive lead and it will be ok.
Does not sound correct to me. Or am I wrong.

There was no documentation with the tach so not sure to hook it up. Looks like one lead to the light and one lead from the motor to the single post on the tachometer. Where does the tachometer hook up on the engine.

Thanks for all of the help in advance.

Re: Tachometer

What engine is this tach being installed on?

Most tachs do not read "0" when not in use but rather zero out when the key is turned to ON.

No instructions is somewhat strange.

What color are the wires leading from the tachometer and what are they marked? If no wires but simply screw terminals are present, what are the terminals marked?

Re: Tachometer

Had to remove some hardware to find the markings There are three poles one marked G for ground, s and I. I The s must be the signal and I stands for ignition. Just a guess.

So where would S, I, and G come from. This is going on a 50 hp Evenrude made in 1987.

Thanks for the help Joe.

Re: Tachometer

If "S" is send or signal, gray wire from rectifier (possibly in the harness)
If "g" is ground, black wire from harness or any good ground in the dash.
If "I" is 12V+ , Purple wire from harness or any switched 12 volt+ supply.
Good luck
PS My Tach sits on 1000 rpm until power is supplied too. May want to ask the question if this tach should be set at 5 or 6 pulse. I remember a recent thread about this subject for mid 80's 2 and 3 cyl motors.

Re: Tachometer

If you hahve a OMC control box with a rubber electrical type plug just under the ignition switch, there will be three sockets there. With a ohm meter you can find which sockets are the Ground (G), voltage of 12v (I) when the key is ON, and the remaining one would be the sensor unit (S).

If you do not have this setup, look for a Gray wire leading from the instrument wiring harness, that is the harness leading back to the engine. That Gray wire is connected to the rectifier at the engine and is the sensor unit (S). The other two.... 12v (I) when the key is ON and the ground (G) would be self explanatory.
