I have a 1963 40hp Johnson Seahorse Model# RDS-25. I suspect that my ignition switch is bad. Through a little internet searching I discovered that my switch part number is 386545 . My question is: "Is there a cross reference number that I can use to go my local auto part store, to get a similar switch?".

Generally speaking automotive switches won't have enough terminals.NAPA does have some marine parts though.

DHP

If you can't locate that 386545 switch or a like replacement, I have a couple left in my remaining stock. They list for about $40.00 or so but I'd discount it somewhat. Address below. BUT check with "iboats" first.

With all deference, Iboats does carry them. In respect to our hosts and for Nuts4Hotwheels' sake, here are the links:
Ignition switch with 'Push to Choke' feature.
This is useful if you have an electric or water-electric choke, and don't want a seperate choke switch.

Direct replacement, click here.

Like DHPMarine said, you need a switch specifically for an outboard. The main reason is that the engine kill circuit works differently than on a car. Rather than removing +12v from a post, two terminals are connected together.
