1989 85 HP Evinrude Bouncing in Reverse

I just bought this boat last weekend and took it out Friday night, Saturday, and then Sunday. On Friday and Saturday I did not have any problems, but on Sunday the Motor was wanting to come up out of the water in reverse.<br /><br />I am new to boating and have no idea what could cause this. I would appreciate any help that someone could provide.<br /><br />It ran fine in reverse the first two times out.<br /><br />Thanks,<br /><br />Mike

The lever that you need to move in order to tilt the engine..... moving it in the opposite direction causes a two fingered type hook device to lock over the rod that goes thru the lower portion of the transom brackets (the brackets that bolt the engine to the boat).<br /><br />Either you didn't have that lever in the right position, someone removed that rod, or sonething is causing the locking mechanism to malfunction.
