Evinrude Temperature Alarm

I have a 1989 Evinrude 50 HP VRO. Last summer the high temperature alarm went off on trip to Canada. We ended disconnecting the alarm to get back to camp since the motor did not seem hot. I ran the motor for three more days and significant travel distance with no problems. I believe it is a faulty temperature sending unit that is falsely tripping the alarm, but I don't know what the temperature sending unit is. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

an easier way will be to cut the tan wires at the control box. no need for them pesky alarms.<br /> but the sender is in the head under the water cover. the factory service manual has the open and close temps.

Not good to second guess an overheat alarm.You're lucky so far.The temp sensor is located near the upper sparkplug area of the block.It'll have a tan wire leading to it.If you haven't replaced the waterpump and T/stat on your engine in the last couple of years ,it's due.If you still get an overheat alarm after that,it is possible that your temp sensor or alarm is defective.

You can test the sensor by dropping it in a pan of water or oil on the stove with the leads connected to an ohm meter or test light. Use a candy thermometer to check the temp. It should switch from some high reading to near short circuit when it warms to about 200-220F and switch back to a high reading when it cools to about 175F.
