Hello I'm new to the site ,A family menber recently purchased a 1976 charger bass boat with a 77 V-4 evinrude 115 horse ,and the first day on the lake ,a sensor that plug's into the right side head between the cylinder's burned up ,this is a brown wire that lead's to under the fly wheel ,now it does not start and has very poor spark ,should i replace the stator? or what else is it I need to look for ,he said there was a buzzer going off for a short time then it quit, does have good compresion

This is the overheating sensor, the fact that it melted speaks for itself " The motor " has over heated, this sensor doesnt stop the motor starting but makesure that the wire isnt shorting to earth, it is a earth wire that when touching earth sounds the overheating horn/buzzer.
As for the motor not starting you will have follow the diagnosis trail on the electrical components to see what is causing this propblem.
Theres plenty of advice on that issue on this forum.

Welcome to iboats stormrider!

That sensor is the overheat temp sensor. It makes the overheat buzzer go off when the block gets hot enough.....which is probably what happened. Take a look under the flywheel for any "goo" laying around. If there is, it's from the stator.

If the compression is still good...cylinders around 90psi and all within 10 to 15% of each other, and the engine still cranks, she still may be OK. Just may have fried the ignition system a little along with some wiring.

You can either take it to a trusted wrench for a check out or get a manual and do it yourself.

If you can add any other info, that would help also like how long the engine was running before it went south, does your friend have any idea if the engines water pump had been service recently, was the gas mixed with the right proportion of oil...50:1?
