My 9.9 Johnson will not run unless the choke is out at least half way. Had the card reworked after finding a jell in the screen. Did not improve. Checked compression cold and measure #1)70 psi and #2)75 psi. Are the rings shot? What should the compression be? The thing starts easy but dies when you put it under any load espically if you try to let the choke off. Smokes horribly when choking and loading.

Compression is okay. Remove, clean thoroughly, and rebuild the carburetor.

Parker Maring went trough the carburetor and said it was repaired but it was no different. Could it be the reed valves that are not closing and causing the need for choking?

I'd say the carb is still fouled. Did Mr. Maring rebiuld it with a kit or just clean it?

He says he put a kit in it, they also said they re-rung the thing when I took it back afer they supposedly did the carb, I know they did not have the head off, so who knows what they really did. Any particular manual you would suggest to pick up to do the carbuertor myself.

You can't put new rings in it without taking the head off. I would have my doubts about what they did, if anything at all. Having to choke it to run it is classic fuel starvation, which points to needing the carb CLEANED. Try a different shop if you can't do it yourself. Ask around a bit at work to see who might recommend a local shop.

An OEM manual is always best, but the Seloc manuals available through Iboats aren't bad...

- Scott
