1987 40 horsepower gearcase assembly

I have a lower unit that someone else disassembled. Does anyone know the proper procedure to reassemble.

Iam having a problem with assembling the pinion gear in the proper sequence with other gears.

It will now go down vertically on the drive shaft because it is too large.

I can assem inside case, but the gears will not fit into case after.

You will need a proper manual to put this case together. It would take to long to explain here. Every thing has to go back in proper order.

Mr. Johnson is correct. The factory manual will have the step by step procedure. I would also like to add that you can't just put the lower units together. There are a few special tools that are needed to assemble them correctly. I would reccomend taking it to a J/E dealer & let them put it back together for you. It would proabbly be cheaper than having to buy the tools.
