I recently was given a boat. This is my first that I have owned. The motor is a 1979 Johnson 75hp 'Stinger'. It has been sitting for about 4 years and worked great the last time it was used.

I am needing to know what I should do to this motor before trying to start it. I know to change out the lower unit oil and change plugs, but past that I am clueless.

Thanks in advance.

I would put in a water pump impeller and rebuild the carbs. Parts should be less than 60 or 70 bucks. Buy a manual..No, really, spend the money and buy a manual. These are simple tasks made easier by a manual. By the way, welcome to iboats. The rest of the crew will be along shortly.

I'd recommend removing the sparkplugs and squirting some TCW3 oil in each hole and turning the engine over by hand/flywheel before cranking on it.That will make it smoke like a pig for a short spell after initial startup, but will prelube the cylinder walls.

Oh,and what fireman57 said.
