Hello, I have a 90 hsp Johnson (mid 80'S). I recently put new throttle cables and a new starter on it. But now when I start it, it idles for awhile then starts to rev up, even when I DO NOTHING. Is this an easy fix? If so... How?

Welcome Seth - Was it doing this before you worked on it?

Suggest that you go to the main page & hop to the engine FAQ section. There are some great posts on troubleshooting.

Do you have a shop manual?

Hello, thanks for the reply...
No it was not doing this before and Yes I do have a shop manual, (and you would think it would say something about this... huh). I don't know much about boat engines, but I know I don't want to blow the ****ing thing up! And thats what it sounds like after it idles for a moment. Any ideas?

hello
double check the trunion is adjusted so when the control returned to the idle position the linkage is pulled back to the throttle stop. its the large screw with a spring and a nut that the screw comes to a bracket mounted on the block.

I agree. If it was idling right before replacing cables ,somethings out of adjustment.Insure the carburetor/s linkage roller is on center and "just touching" the scribe line of the throttle cam when controls are in the neutral position.
