Hello, My manual doesn't go up to 1988 so I don't know what the shifting rod length should be. I was told the shift lever under the carb should be straight up and down in neutral. I was getting some jerking when taking off from a start and adjusted the rod till the arm was straight up and down. I can manually shift the engine into forward and reverse, but the shift cable doesn't move far enough to get both (most of the time). What should the shift cable travel be? It doesn't seem to move very far either way. Also what is the shift rod length supposed to be for a 1988 Evinrude 175. Thanks Steven
Welcome Schlosss!Well....the lever under the carb will not be vertical in neutral. The shift lever on the starboard side of the engine block will be near vertical in neutral.I believe the shift rod length to be 21 15/16" +/- 1/32, measured from the top of the gear case to the center of the shift rod hole. When you hook up the shift cable, make sure the shift lever on the engine is in neutral, (spin the prop) and the control box is in neutral. Connect the shift cable casing guide to the shift lever and adjust the trunion nut on the shift cable so the barrel of the trunion fits into the anchor.Shift from neutral to forward, then to reverse while spinning the prop to check out the work.
