I'm hoping someone can give me some advise as to why my engine stalls at low speed. It's an 1989 evinrude 140 with the VRO system. It runs great at high speed but at idle or low speed it will cough and sometimes stall. It kind of sounds like ba ba ba ba ba ba cough, ba ba ba ba ba ba cough, etc.... If any of you johnyrude fans can help it would be appreciated. Thanks
Yep, sounds like the idle circuits and intermediate circuits may be clogged a little. A thorough carb cleaning and rebuild will probably solve your problem.
FD235148, I have been running down a similar issue with my 85 J140. Do a search for thread "Question for Dhadley - Part 2". It containns a lot of the diagnostics and repairs that were recommended to me on this board. That will get you started.
I feel your pain.. I have the weak sputtering idle on my 115 crossflow as well. I gave up on the shop working on it, but I'm determined with the help of this board to make it happen!!! Good Luck..
