I have a 1994 Evinrude 8 hp 2 stroke and I need a powerpack for it.
I also have a 1987 Johnson 8 hp 2 stroke that sorta runs and I want to know if I can use the same power pack for both engines???

If not what is the diff between the power packs?

Re: what is the difference

This could be wrong, but my parts book doesn't show a powerpack for an '87 8HP...matter of fact, it doesn't show an 8HP in 1987 period...????

My 2005 P & A book show them the same, as does the quick ref. chart.

My Partsmart show what your dealer does.
Nearly as I can tell, the difference is rev limit.

Joe Reeves is bouncing around here today, he might well have an answer!

Re: what is the difference

Interesting......

PartSmart (2005) shows the 87' pn as 586691 and the 94' as 586800.....both superceeded numbers. Now the really funny thing is that the 6hp of both years superceeds to 586800...same as the 94' 8hp. Don't have the P&A book but Rabidfish says they are the same.......I dunno.

Re: what is the difference

sunbeam
if both packs mount on the side, carfully inspect the wire colors at the connectors. the connectors are labeled A,B,C,D and sometimes E. some packs had a seperate wire for kill. other than some packs had SLOW ( I dont think the 8 ever did) most of the changes were in the rev limiter. if you already have the pack and the wire colors match give it a try. the input voltages are about the same as are the outputs.

Re: what is the difference

The 1987 8hp model was/is 8RCU & 8RLCU. As "Rodbolt" states above in his reply/post, the 1989 model incorporates the powerpack etc "under" the flywheel. The 1987 model incorporates a external powerpack.

Those two (above) obviously will not interchange.

Being retired, I do not have the 1994 book. However, it's quite unlikely that the engineers back tracked and returned the powerpack to being an external one.

Bottom line.... The external and internal modules will not interchange.

Re: what is the difference

The partsmart shows #586691.
This is the power pack alone.

The quick reference chart and the 2005 P & A book both show the #586800.
This is a kit that has(besides the 586691), several different connectors, boots, etc... to convert almost any 2 cylinder to the current power pack.

The UFI power pack is a completly different animal alltogether... They still make it for parts, but the engine have been back to using the external pack since 1994
