1986 erude wont run with out choking

i have recently purchased a boat equiped with a 1986 evinrude 25hp and it will not run with out manually choking the dog out of it! i am wondering if there are some breather parts missing? and if that could be my problem?<br />if i put 2 fingers over the inlet to the carb it will run for a few seconds then i remove and it dies? i have found that if i manually (with my fingers) choke off and on it will run prety much indefinitely(but you gotta stay after it with those fingers). it looks to be that there was something bolted on to the carb inlet but i dont know what? i have also replaced the fuel lines and fuel pump. seems not to have made any diffirence. also replaced fuel tank and fittings. <br />just abot ready to pull my hair out!!!<br /><br />breather maybe? and i dont know if it even matters?

It probably needs a carb overhaul.<br /><br />The kit is about $16.00<br />Buy a service manual and do it yourself.<br />"almost" anyone can rebuild that carb.<br /><br />And... nothing bolts to the front of that carb

slapappy,sounds like a classic case of clogged idle circuit in the carb.I would start with a fuel sample,and proceed to cleaning at least the carb.By memory,there is nothing attached to the front of the carb,but a look at the partsbook at your local dealer will verify this.<br /><br />DHP

Sounds like it's getting too much air, or too little fuel! I would say that your either sucking air in somewhere, ie, fuel pipe, connector, etc, or one of your carb jets is blocked. <br /><br />Does it die at all speeds or just at idle?<br /><br />Good luck<br />Steve

it wont even start without choking.<br />idles for a few secs and dies unless you keep choking off and on. i have already bought the carb kit but have never done anything like that! <br />was kinda hoping for a easier solution! sounding kinda wimpy aint I. hahaha! oh well. thats what i was afraid of!
