I have a 1979 85hp electric shift outboard. I seem to have problems shifting the motor into reverse when cold. I have replaced the shift switch at the control box with no improvement. Sometimes I can get reverse by switching from forward directly to reverse but this will probabally trash the motor. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Re: evinrude shift problem

Better give a model number so we know which engine year you have. The last electric shift 85 was 1972 and the first was 1968.

and while we wait for that info, let me ask have you changed the oil in the lower unit recently? if not maybe change it and look at the condition of the oil and for flakes etc in it. if you have changed the oil, was it for electric shift units? just a thought or 2.

I don't remember the model # off the top of my head and the boat is in storage however I am sure it is a 1979 as I have already verified it. Also I have already changed the oil with the proper lubricant and there was no evidence of metal shavings.

Listen to Seahorse... Your motor is not a 79 if it has an electric shift.
