Boat is Whaler Montauk 17' w/ '96 Rude 90 HP. Speed control has a detent way fwd in its travel. Predetent speed is 1200 rpm. When I push on the throttle lever it jumps thru the detent to nearly wide open, throwing driver and passengers backward. It's nearly impossible to ease thru the detent for smooth acceleration. Any clues where to start troubleshooting?

Re: '96 Rude 90 hp remote control

Welcome to iboats majjak.

A couple questions here:
Is the rig new to you?
Does the engine rev up before going into gear?
Remove the top off the engine and with the engine not running, have a helper ease the control to the forward position (spin the prop with your foot so the clutch dog and gear lobes mate). Watch cables at the engine and see which one moves first. The engine should go into gear first before the throttle cable moves.

Does the engine go into reverse OK?
Has there been any maint done to the engine recently?

If yer not sure what you are looking at, take the rig to a trusted wrench. And if the engine is idling at 1200rpm in the water, that's a little high. Should be down near the 700 to 800rpm area if I recall right.

Keep us posted....thanks!

OBJ - Yep it's new to me. It idles at the 700 to 800 you mentioned, then speeds up only a little to the ~1200 rpm. I was planning to start at the motor and check the operation of the motor linkage first then the cable to see which end has the problem. THanks for your suggestions

majjak,I'm also wondering whether the throttle lever tension is a bit loose from your description of problem. If your controls are 96' model OMC ,it has an adjustment for tension setting.

Also ,when operating from an out-hole throttle up ,it's a little easier to control the path of the throttle lever if you'll saddle your hand down to the base of the lever, instead of at the top of the lever. It will help prevent over shoots in throttle setting.

Re: '96 Rude 90 hp remote control

I chased the problem to the housing and linkages at the throttle lever. I could do little about it though, because I could not get the housing off because the shaft from the lever went thru it. and of course the lever wouldn't come off because a collar or bearing inside was stopped by the housing. I don't know how it was assembled, but I sure can't disassemble it.
