1977 70hp Johnson Starter Motor. Hope you can help me, I need to replace the front bearing but am having trouble removing the bendix. I guess the nut at the end needs to come off, then will the bendix unwind off? There is a round thingy between the gear and the bearing housing, how does it come off??? Thanks for your help.

The bendix should come off when you remove the nut. I am assuming the round thingy is a snap ring. Expand it slightly with snap ring plier, then work it off with a screw driver.

Front bearing? There is a top and bottom bearing. Removing the nut from the top of the armature will allow the entire bendix assembly to be removed.
