I have aquired a Johnson 50hp. (swap for my old Ride On Mower).(got a new USA Ride On tooooo - green with a yellow seat :) :)and have mowed the place twice since New years Eve :) )
My worker and I can not find the identification plate for this outboard.
He has a similar but slighly older one, and says his ID is on the flat plate on the front, but it is in the form of a sticker that is pealing off, (not a riveted plate or punched in to the alloy.)
He says the ID may have come off this one if it too was a sticker.
He has found a number on the Block = M317503, plus another number on a plate riveted to the bracket mounting the motor to a boat with 50203C, and below that, 76921.
Is there anywhere else the outboards complete ID could be found please.
We have also been told it has a Belgium Leg. Could someone explain that to me.
I want to get a service mannual so are these the right questions to ask. We are guessing late 80's or 90/91, but a guess is not good enough.
Been through previous topics and visited recommended sites to no avail.
Can any one help.
Many thanks
Cheers
Phillip

Hi Phillip....the 50203C is the model number. It checks out to be a 1972....Evinrude. Sounds like someone swapped the top but thats OK....same engine. Don't know about the Belgium leg.

Re: Identification Johnson 50

Thanks OBJ. Now that little gem of info has us stumped.
Seems the backet mounting the motor to the boat (with this Evinrude No) may have been changed. The paint is flaking there, and only there - may have been touched up "white" to match the rest of the motor at some stage.
Is there anywhere else in-around the motor where we can find a number to identify this motor - so we can purchase the appropriate Mannual?
I have been told 'Belgium Leg' has a much thicker drive shaft and a bigger prop. Not from a very reliable souce though.
Cheers
Phillip

Phillip...check on the engine block for a large core plug. The model number should be on it along with the serial number.
