My first post. Looks like a lot of expertise here. I have a 24 Mako with twin 97 carburated Evinrude 200's. On the past few trips I noticed the starboard engine would max out at 5100 rpm while the port one was at 5900. They run good at low RPM and run fairly evenly up to the low 4000's, then the starboard one starts falling behind. The engines only have 150 original hrs on them. I have only checked & replaced fuel lines and filters. My specific question is: Since I have two engines, is it worth my while to swap power packs to see if that is it?

I would do a compression check on the engine in question first. If you have a plug problem it may show up at WOT. Test spark on all 6. when you pull the plugs for comp check, inspect each one for color and general condition.

Welcome aboard!

One other thing, swap tachs and confirm low reading. Also, check prop conditions and verify motors are trimmed similar. Good luck

Thanks for the feedback. Props are brand new 17 pitch stainless. I pulled the plugs but nothing seems out of the ordinary. Motors are even and trimmed. Tachs not an issue as there is an audible difference and lower than normal speed. I just wanted to exhaust all simple things to try before going to the stealership for compression check. Is it worth trying a carb spray in case a fuel jet is clogged?

By the way, what is the proper way to to test spark? Also, can a mechanically inclined person do a compression check or is the cost of the test equipment unreasonable?

a compression guage cost about 30$ and ANYBODY can do it.

#1 take out all plugs
#2 screw in comp guage into plug hole
#3 spin motor over with starter for about 2 seconds

do this for each plug hole, writing down/ noting wich plug holes had how much compression.

should take about 10 mins per motor

all 6 holes should be within 10 percent total variation.

do it yourself and save. ALSO, go to the bottom left of this page and order a manual! money well spent.

your peoblem sounds like a spark issue, not getting full spark to one or more cylinders at full throttle

swapping packs between motor should tell you this or not

I got a compression gauge. Didn't run the engs before checking and didn't set throttle to full. Just checking cold, I got 110 & 112 on the top cyls, 107 & 115 on the centers and 100 & 105 on the lower cylinders. These numbers would only get better if I did it correctly wouldn't they? I swapped power packs and will test tomorrw.

Your compression readings are OK. You might decarb the motors. What readings do you get from the other motor? While you are testing at WOT try to pump the primer bulb on the low rpm motor to see if the rpm picks up. If it does you may have some crud in one or more of the carbs. You might also try to check the spark for each cylinder. They should all jump a 1/2" or so gap with a bright blue snap.

OK, I will check the spark. I assume this is done holding the spark plug cap near the tip of the plug with eng idling?

Just at cranking speed with a fully charged battery, those leads should snap a blue white spark 7/16" to 1/2" to ground.Engine not running.

A shot in the dark here, but have you changed plugs recently????
Another item I would check would be to swap plugs in the 2 engines and see if the problem follows the plugs-don't laugh, I've seen this many times and the plugs look fine, but we can't simulate true compression or heat when testing, even with a good tester.

Tested engs after swapping powerpacks. Stbd eng runs good but couldn't tell what rpm it would reach because the port eng would quit when I tried to put it in gear and it ran rough and died at idle. Does anyone have a suggestion where I can get a good deal on a power pack?

Disregard. I used the "part finder" option in iboats.com and the order is in...much more reasonable than I would have thought.
