adding trim/tilt to 1976 115hp

hello, could anybody tell me what years/hp's i could use as donors to add tilt/trim to a 1976 115hp with 20inch shaft V4? or would i just be better off getting the aftermarket trim kits like those from panther or CNC marine? <br /><br />im thinking that the aftermarket would work as a trim unit AND a fixed height jack plate, moving the motor back and adding some X dimension.<br /><br />but if i get the origonal from say, ebay, i would save some cash.<br /><br />any ideas? im open<br /><br />mike

There are TONS to be had from ebay. I picked up one on ebay for $200cdn (if I wouldn't have bid so soon it would have been less). It was for a '76 150hp but I'm fitting it to my 1972 100hp. I believe 90hp - 150hp are all the same system. If in doubt ask the seller, more often then not they DO know.

I spent a couple of months this year trying to win an ebay auction for one of the old OMC tilt/trim units. During this period, I didn't come across too many. When I did, it seemed they were highly sought after, based on the numbers of bids and final sell prices. Most of the units I became interested in got bid up beyond what I thought these units were worth. But... who knows maybe my problem was that I was trying to find one during peak boating season. Maybe in the dead of winter the demand for these won't be so great and better deals can be had. I eventually bought a very clean CMC aftermarket unit for $250. It works great, and is still supported by the manufacturer, probably a better choice in the long run.

I started looking for all the parts including the tilt/trim unit the week after I bought the boat (august) and found the actual tilt unit meant for my '72, but passed it up because it was about a week before my monthly pay check so money was a little tight, especially after buying the boat. I gave up for the rest of the season and really started looking again and researching in the beginning of october. Was told nothing else would fit a '72, but after reading, questioning, etc, i figured I could make a '76 unit work. I had TONS to choose from and managed to pick one up from a gentleman that drove into town frequently. There is another gentleman on ebay that is a pleasure to do business with that has alot of parts. His store name is dadsboatstuff and his ebay name I beleive is easyabc, worth a look.

When I looked it seemed there were tons of the newer style but few of the older type Power T/T units. Maybe I was searching using the wrong keywords... My self imposed spending limit for a original style unit was $200. Beyond that I couldn't justify it because I figured I was about halfway towards the purchase of a new CMC unit. Most of the ones selling early in the summer seemed to go for $250-$300. I ultimately happened across a nice CMC unit for $250 "Buy it Now" which seemed very reasonable so I jumped on it.

that's a very decent price for the CMC units. They've been going for $400+ lately. When I searched ebay I started just by power trim, then realized power tilt would bring up more, then power tilt and trim, and variations. It was kind of weird because different variations would bring up more, less, and different units so I ended up searching all of them every few days.

I highly recomend cmc's pt130, I have owned one for seven years, trouble free unit for five years of hard use. Every part is available directly from cmc at reasonable prices with great service. Just check your transom dimensions for steering cable/linkage clearance, I was going to put seastar on my motor but couldn't because of the setback.

I have just got a PT130 off ebay for $266. Bad part was there is no relays or any wiring except for the 2 wires coming out of the actuator. Switch the hot wire makes it go either up or down. Can anyone explain to me how I make this thing work? Thanks guys and hope I haven't hijacked this post.

If it's a two wire system, you'll need two relays and either a DPDT switch or a nice two way momentary rocker switch (middle is nothing). What has to happen is one wire is ground while the other is hot to go one way, then they switch around to make it go the other way.<br /><br />Basically, when neither relay is triggered, the wires should be tied to ground. Then pushing the switch in one direction, should cause ONE relay to trigger making one of the wires hot. When the switch is pushed the other way, the OTHER relay latches, causing the other wire to become hot. Because at rest each relay is ground, you only need to trigger one at a time. This will give you up and down. If you need a diagram, just let me know.

Thanks for the reply. I think? I understand what you are telling me. A diagram would do wonders for me. Could I use like a couple of Ford starter relays. I understand that they should be 40 amps?<br />Thanks in advance for the diagram.

I thought starters had solenoids compared to relays. Not to terribly versed up on it though. You can probably find everything you need from Digikey. Shoot me off an e-mail (admin@design-cycle.com) and I'll get something off to you. Ciao!
