i got a johnson 2hp 96 model motor (hj2redu 97) for nuthing. the magneto was stufed so i got a new one the motor would start no problem run for a minute or two under load or not then stall and die after a few minutes it would run again then die.

i left the motor for about 6 months cause i was out a boat so no need for motor however i now have a new boat and i need this motor working so i replaced the lower end units seals and oil as it was leaking i also pulled the carby apart and cleaned it out now the thing wont run at all.

i have about 100psi of compresion and the sparks is good and strong and i know there is fuel geting there cause the plug is wet i have tried spraying areostart down the hatch and still it wont fire. is it possible that the magneto or sensor thing on the opisite side is broken if so how do you test it. also could it be the coil lead or black thingy with all the wires going between the coil and the magneto sensor plate thingy how do i test them. also does this motor use some kind of timeing if so how do you set it as i have noticed that the sensor thingy oposite the magneto slides side to side and has notchis on it like timeing marks.

i am at a complete loos as to what to do i have spark and lots of ither i should have some kind of bang going on good or bad but still nuthing i took the pulg out and it arked against the block a very long arke it lit up some petrol that was on the workbench so i think it might be arkeing on the wrong stroke any help would be apreciated thanks.

G'Day, SG.

First: No ether. Very dangerous to 2 stroke engines because it is 1.) lacking lubricant and 2.) explosive. Use a spray bottle with some of your premixed fuel.

I suspect you are badly out of time on the ignition. Could be the flywheel installation (no key or broken key) or simply the linkage synchronization.

Just to confirm what you have already done, go to the Engine FAQs and read through the "Outboard wont start". There might be something you overlooked.

You will need a manual to correctly time the ignition and synchronize it with the carb. It should also allow you to review the carb overhaul.

If the crankcase is not tightly sealed or the reeds bent or chipped you may have weak or no scavenging.

OEM Manuals can be had from www.kencook.com

Good luck. :)

Re: 2 hp wont start

Your piston is also a pump. On upstroke it draws fuel/air into the crankcase through the reed valve(s). On the downstroke it pumps the fuel/air, via bypass passages into the cylinder. This process is called scavenging.

If there is a poor air seal to the crankcase it will scavenge an uncombustible mix. If the reeds don't seal correctly it will simply push the mix back out.

Common causes of weak/no scavenging are poor gasket seals on the intake, leaky reeds, blown seals at one end or the other of the crankshaft, leaky gasket on bypass cover.

You have verified that you have a hot spark. That means that your ignition system is working. You have not verified that it is occurring within an acceptable range of degrees of the piston. The use of ether can easily cause a sheared flywheel key which will shift the timing.. . often enough to prevent the engine running.

Because you overhauled the carb without benefit of a Manual there is also the possibility that the carb is flooding the engine due to a sticking/incorrectly set float or some other oversight.

You need a manual. Try your local library, where you can make copies of relevant pages, but you still need to buy one.

To quote one of our long-time experts, "He who tries to work on an outboard without a Manual has a fool for a mechanic." Pretty harsh, but so true.

Good luck. :)
