I purchased a 1986 Johnson 70 horse. The engine runs fine, but I want to change the water pump. I Know I have to disconnect the shift rod and there is a screw holding it, but I can't see the screw. I am looking from the shift controls side. I can see the shift rod but it appears that the engine block is between the side and the screw. How do I get to this screw?

Re: Replacing Johnson water pump

Look from the other side. You should be able to see it and with some manipulations of fuels lines you should be able to get to it with a 1/4" drive extension and swivel socket 3/8"
