I need the head bolt sequence and torque specs for my 1983 75hp johnson 3 cyl. The center spark plug lost threads, and I gotta helicoil it. Was running fine yesterday, suddenly dropped a cylinder - weird. I applied the choke and it picked back up strong for a second or two, then back out. Will run okay at low speed, but won't plane. Checked the fuel pump screen, it's okay. Went to pull the spark plug to check and it came out full of threads from the head. Can't check compression on the center cyl yet, but upper and lower have 140#. Any ideas??

Re: head bolt torque specs 83 johnson 75 3cyl

Welcome to iboats Bob!

Torque is 18 to 20ft lb. Start with the center bolts and work your way out in a circular pattern. I usually torque the head in three steps. Just don't torque each bolt to 20 all at once.

Get the helix coil in and check the compression. 140 is really great as far as compression is concerned. When you find out what the other is let us know....thanks.
