Which Years for a Blown Up But Rebuildable V4??

I have a pair of good running 1987 1.6 L 110 hp bubbleback V4s (Sea Drives). I am thinking that it would be a nice "winter" project to buy a "for cheap" blown up powerhead and do a rebuild for a spare in the event that one of my working motors go south.

I would like to know what years would be compatible with my present set-up? This is important because I have a pair.

First look at the linkage on your blocks on the starboard side. Near the intake and at the bottom there is the lower pan mount. On the arm that comes out (with the rubber bushing in it) there may be a threaded boss there.

If your linkage uses that boss you will need to find a block that has it or at least the casting. If yours does not use the boss any crossflow bubbleback from 1979 on will work.

Any flat-back crossflow from 1979 on will work if you duplicate the 140 style porting you have. Adding the bubble exhaust is easy.

I'm not farmiliar with the term threaded boss but if you mean the part of the block that the gear shift linkage connects to I think I understand. Check the image below & let me know if this is it.

Also could you explain what you mean by porting.

Thanks,

Howard

Yep, thats it. Any block you use will need that boss. Some later model outboard blocks had the boss casting but wasnt cut and drilled. You need a block that has at least that casting on the front half. If it isnt cut and threaded its no big deal. Flagship has the jig to cut it and thread the hole properly.

This boss is the only difference between an outboard and a Sea Drive V4 crossflow block.

Refering to the porting simply means the port area. If you find a block with the boss but smaller ports, dont worry. When you bore and/or hone the block the ports can be opened to match the ones you have. Again, no big deal while the motor is apart anyway.

If the block you find doesnt have the "bubble back" exhaust plate (if it has the flat plates) you can install your "bubble back" manifold and cover. Dont worry about the stuffer blocks inside. They're expensive, require machining and dont really do anything on a V4 in the rpm range youre at. Leaving them out may help slightly.
