Let's see....

A broken wire coming from the sending unit...would register as EMPTY.

A shorted wire from the sending unit...would register FULL (this is how you can test the gauge...ground the sending unit wire, and the gauge pegs FULL).

A stuck float will stay wherever it decided to stick at.

Have you tried tapping on the face of the gauge? Does the gauge move off of FULL, with the key off?

As for how much fuel you have used, the only way that I can think of, is to top it off again...and note how much you added.

I have a similar issue that I'm trying to figure out. Does your's register full all the time? Or just when in the water? When I pull mine out of the water the fuel gauge registers the proper fuel level. I'm going to check my grounding circuit. I was just wondering if your symptoms were the same as what I was getting.

fuel ga. will always read toward full when is moving or about to go plane or on plane. correct reading is when boat is stopped .float is at rear of tank, gas runs to back, reads toward full.
