What's up people? Mine name is Dusty and new to the forum.
Got this boat from my dad. He got it back in 1986 and never did a damn thing with it. He let her sit and age for 23 years. I had this bright idea to get it running and put her back in the water. Anyway... before I tried to fire the engine. I did a compression check, about 60psi in each cylinder, bought some new plugs, changed the oil, and new gas. Jumped the starter from battery and after about 6 seconds the thing started right up... Went out bought a can of "Seafoam" and ran about 1.75 gallons of fuel through the engine. Plan is to let it sit until I go back. (boats in Ohio, I'm in indianapolis...next weekend)

Here is a video of the engine running.

trying to find a gasket kit and control cables. If anyone has the same engine hit me up, inform me of all the trick sacks about the engine. Also looking for a good resource for replacement parts....

steering control cables is basically one big long steel cables wrapped in plastic coating for rust protection. its uses a pulley system by the way so not sure what to do on that

yup i acually just did a 35hp of that same year by the way. it was a johnson though but everything is the same thign excpet decals and hood.

for the impeller u need to drop the lower unit. after u disconnect the shift rod the panals on the side of the engine on the lower part. u take the back cover off. theres 8 philip screws. they can get stuck up in there pretty good if u ahvent touched them. put some wd-40 aorund them and let soak if there stuck. then get a number 3 philips head screwdrive and tap that with a hammer pretty hard in the screws to loosen them or use a impact driver. there u will find the hidden top bolt to dorp the lower unit. and of course the 6 u see at the bottom part. careful when it drops it drops. the thing is a little heavy not over whelming though. then u take the pump off and replace impeller

now there r two copper water tubes ok. when u install the lower unit back on they shoudl be coming form the top down. i had a problem with mine cause one of em got stuck stuck in the pump. when putting the lower unit back on u can look through the exhaust port where the prop is and see if ur tubes r in. its crucail that there in. and its suggusted u replace the thermo stat.

when u start the motor up run the t stat out for now and check and see how it pumps water should be good. then pour a little water on the head to make sure its not steaming after u warm up the motor. then out ur hand and should be able to touch for about 3 seconds. then u know ur water system is ok and install new t stat in motor. u must run with the t stat

I have not removed anything. The way it sat for 23 years is the same condition I started the engine. I would assume that it's in. My dad said he took it out 3 times and after the 3rd time he never messed with it again. just let her set.

where did you get your gaskets from. i see them on maxrules $17 for the kit, $24 to ship it... prolly not!

yeah, carb. I dont think the head gasket is leaking, however.. there is some oxidizing around the entire head gasket, and on the head. I'm thinking I'm going to replace it anyway, just so I can take a look at the cylinders and pistons. The bottom cylinder is running very rich, the entire engine is running rich due to the fact the engine will not run the the choke off. When there's a surge of vibration the butterfly will vibrate open briefly and the engine will die. I put the hood on and that seemed to help the air/fuel mix. I could give it 1/2 power and it balanced out pretty nice, with the seafoam mixed.
