And if you compare that to the 1960 Evinrude Starflite 75hp, the first year of the 75, it only weighed in at 216 lbs dry. Hmmm... It was a gas hog though!

Thanks, I am thinking about an upgrade to a 90 HP E-tec and wanted to know the difference in weight of the two. The Etec coming in at 320 lbs. and my current motor coming in at 250, will the extra 70 lbs be a problem? and by the way the current motor still has the tnt.

Hi, Can you give us a hint what you are putting this on? What is the boat rated for and what is it's dimensions?

What boat are you rigging it to? What is its max hp rating?

Sorry Gene, typing at same time.

Re: Engine weight for 75 HP

The boat is a 1983 16' Sportcraft Sportsman bowrider. Max HP on the capacity plate is 95. I am unsure of the weight of the boat itself. I currently run the aformentioned 75 HP motor. I want to upgrade because of reliabality issues, no problems yet but 25 years old is getting up there, and I use the boat for water skiing alot and I am 235 lbs., the 75 does pretty well for its age but the older I get............. you know what I am saying. More power is never a problem. Btw it is the boat in my avatar.

Re: Engine weight for 75 HP

Hi,
I recently upgraded the 3 cylinder 60hp on my boat to a 100hp V4. I really couldn't tell a difference in the way the boat sat in the water with the extra 70lbs on the transom. My boat is a 15.5ft trihull. Your boat looks like it sits pretty level at rest with the 75 on it. I don't think that you will have any problems with a bigger motor, the weight difference isn't that much. BTW the weight I gave you was what my 60hp(basically the same motor as your 75) accually weighed hanging on a scale hook.
Good luck,
Brian

PS Thats a nice looking boat

I dont see any problems rigging that 90 to that boat, as Guy says the boat is sitting pretty level.

Re: Engine weight for 75 HP

Hi, Nice clean boat! Unless you can get a really good buck out of your old engine, which I doubt, you're going to spend an awful lot of money to do this switch. Have you considered just running the 75 until it develops serious problems. That may be 10 years from now. I bought a Suzuki 140 4 stroke and really like it but it wasn't a smart thing to do financially and I'm going to get killed on the resale. There are some horror stories out there on the problems with the new 2 strokes too. I'd think about it. Good luck!

Re: Engine weight for 75 HP

I have a 1964 75 hp on my 16 runabout and I considered upgrading to a 60 hp E-Tec. The shop told me approximately $10k installed. Even if my gas usage dropped to half it would take me 40 years for the payoff. It costs a lot to be friendly to the environment.

How did that work out? Was it pretty quick, powerful? Like I said perviously the cap. plate says 95HP max, did you overpower the boat?
