73 Evinrude 65hp lower unit question

Hey guys im a new boat owner and need some help. I recently changed the water impeller in the lower unit after re-assembaly the gearcase will shift into forward but not reverse. If i adjust the linkage then it goes into reverse and not forward. What could have caused this, befor i changed the water impeller it was fine. Also i noticed in forward the propeller has a quarter turn play clockwise and counter but in reverse, it only locks in one direction, its free to spin the other direction. Is this normal

PS. IT has a mechanical shift

Actually, that wouldn't be "mechanical" shift. It would be hydraulic - assisted mechanical shift. I believe there is some "slop" in the shift assist assembly when the motor is not running. It works similar to power steering on a car.

What did you set the shift rod height at?

When you're testing are you shifting it by hand at the motor or with the control cable hooked up? Are you shifting it with the motor running or off?

If you're shifting it with the motor not running you'll need to turn the propshaft as you shift.

Im shifting from the control box with the cable hooked up

motor off (stator went bad)

i didn't know im supposed to turn the shaft while shifting
maybe thats the problem.

I just dont get why it wont go into reverse after i re-installed the lower unit, It was fine befor i took it off could i have damaged something or is this just fine tuning
