1960 75HP Super Sea Horse Choke System

This motor is not yet running but it is not in bad shape.
Once it runs I will need to attend to the choke on this old downdraft Carb. The original was Hot Water but it is missing the guts. I think the electric solenoid would be better if I can find one. Any thoughts on this?d

James, FR or Joe Reeves would probably answer this one better than I but if you could rig up the solenoid and get rid of the hot water choke, that would be the way to go. The hot water choke would let the choke gradually open as the engine water temp increased. This kept the engine running a tad rich until the engine got up to temp. The same type of system came back for a short time later on but was run off a heat sensor in the head which would do the same thing to the choke plate. On the later engines, most guys will just disconnect the heat sensor. Once the engine is running the choke comes full open. I haven't really noticed any difference in running on these type engines with or without the delayed choke opening.

Not sure without looking at it, but I imagine it is possible. It would take careful examination to see if it is compatible with the electric choke parts. But you will need several parts in addition to the solenoid, including different choke shaft and do-dads that operate it. Once you remove the shaft from a donor carb, it is usually destroyed due to the screws being staked unless you grind off the staked part of the screws before backing them out. Use new screws and locktite to install.

The V4-50, Gale 60, and newer J/E 65 will have the type carb you want, Reference picture attached. Carbs themselves will be different in other respects.
