Removing Outdrive Problem

Let me start by saying that I am somwhat new to boating but have decided to do some work on a boat I have just aquired.

I have a 1986 Forester with an OMC 3.0L Engine.

I am in the process of removing the outdrive to then remove/rebuild the engine. This is a process I just started and from reading the forum it has become apparent that I need to get a copy of a manual on this particular engine/drive. However, I have just orderd it today, but am already a few hours into removing the outdrive. I seem to have everything ready to go except for the steering linkage/cable.

Here is were my limited knowledge of boats comes in. I have looked at this thing for a few hours today but cannot figure out how it gets disconnected at the motor. I can wait for the manual which will hopefully point me in the right direction, but I was hoping someone here might know the answer.

It would appear that the whole housing that holds the cable would have to come off before the outdrive can be removed but again i am not sure if I am missing something.

If anyone knows what I am missing I would appreciate some help.

Thanks,

Chris

Re: Removing Outdrive Problem

Strange that a 3.0 needs rebuilding.Strong motor.

As to the drive, unbolt the trim cylinders, remove 6 nuts/washers pull the drive off.

Good luck with the new manual.

Re: Removing Outdrive Problem

Thanks,

Reason for rebuild:

It looks like the previous owner forgot to winterize :'( a few times while it was sitting...

In any case I will do what you suggest but am still not sure if this will help me in disconnecting the steering link from the back of the motor.

Thanks for your input.

Re: Removing Outdrive Problem

sounds like it's a stringer drive.
1. remove battery from boat (move it 50 feet away)
2. take cover off shift converter behind engine (1/2" wrench for the nut on the shift linkage - slot screwdriver for the screws)
3. unhook the cables and reinstall the little clips back into the holes so you dont lose them and put the plastic guide back in so you dont lose it either
4. reach behind the converter and grab the spring loaded pawls with your one hand
5. push the cable out of the converter box with the other hand
6. soak the cable at the int. hsg. with pb blaster or similar.
7.remove cable retaining bracket on rear of int.
8. one person push cable second person pull it
9. pull the rubber steering bumpers off
10. remove 4 trunnion bolts- keep the Left trunnion left and right trunnion right.
11. Mark the ball gears with paint so you can put them back to the same index (it apparently makes the ballgears live longer)
12. lift the drive up and off.
