I totally screwed up when I took the lower unit off about 2 months ago. Some how I lost the coupler and jamb nut on my shift shaft, so now I dont know where my marks were or anything? I ordered a new coupler and jamb nut from mercury, and I also ordered a manual ($71.45 by the way), have a screwed my shift shaft up? I hope that service manual tells me how to get it back in place. I ordered a new seal kit, impeller kid, washers all that stuff so i can fix it up while i have it broken down. So hopefully this can steer me to putting this thing back together.Originally posted by Lake Runner:
The prop is the best place to start, just make sure you disconnect the battery first. This may be a good time to do some lower end PM. Seals, impeller, a little grease. So here's the sequence.

1. Disconnect battery
2. Remove prop
3. Mark shift shaft positions
4. Disconnect shift shaft
5. Unbolt lower unit from leg
6. Have at it
7. Once you fixed it - reverse order for assembly

Clymers and seloc are good but the Service manual will never steer you wrong!
I just got all my parts in and the service manual. What I am wondering do I have to take all the gears out to get the shift shaft out. Do I need the puller or any other tools? Or do you guys know a way to do it without buying the puller?Originally posted by Lake Runner:
The prop is the best place to start, just make sure you disconnect the battery first.
