I just bought a 1975 115 merc with power trim, serial no 4238162, on ebay. it has a new cdi wiring harness new plugs. the seller claims it has been serviced and runs very well, with comp at approx 140.
well comp is 120, i have good spark at the plugs good comp but gas seems not to make it from the carbs to the cylinders. if i give the cylinders a squirt of starting fluid it will fire. gas leaks from all carbs rather than going into intake.
Im stumped.
hd9linesman

I would say disassemble and clean or do a rebuild on carbs for starters.

Re: MERC WONT PERK

thank you, ive been browsing the forum pages looking for answers and i found one that mentions a primer valve.
i have a push button choke ,butterflies seem to work properly, could there be a similar valve not allowing gas to pass through carbs??

Motors would have either a primer or choke, but not both. Newer inline 115s idled on the top two and had an accelerator pump injecting 3 and 4 on take-off...

Even though the engine has been cleaned externaly, the internal passages of the carbs could be full of muck. I'd rebuild them.

P.S. don't use starter fluid in an outboard, it has no lubricant and can damage the engine. Use some pre-mix fuel/oil in a spray bottle and squirt that into the throats of the carbs

A 1975 inline 115 6 cyl needs all the help it can get while starting cold...Yes it needs an inline primer bulb between the fuel tank and fuel pump...Plus a good working choke...You have to prime the carbs almost to the flood stage to fire them off cold...And a battery in good condition These have to really spin to get started...The later model 4 cyl 115 runs on two then four...

Re: MERC WONT PERK

It would be Ok if there was a small amount of leakage of fuel at first..Sometimes it takes a bit to seat the needles..If there is a flooding condition afterwards the carbs need the latest updated kits with alcohol resistant parts...
