At the end of August, I had the stator and Tilt and Trim Motor replaced on my 1998 Carbed 225 Mercury. I have been so busy with work and family that today is the only day that I have had the opportunity to even try to do anything on it. When I started it up, I immediately noticed that the Tach didnt work, My Volt Meter didnt work and the Temp gauge was pegged out even with the motor off. The gas guage also did not work.

I did the obvious and check the batteries and got 12.31 Volts on both. I have 12.13 Volts at my power box under the console. When I turn on my VHF, it is pulsing and not even allowing the Weather channel to come in. It has to be something electrical, but I have no idea what.

Has anyone seen this type of behavior after a stator was replaced and could possibly point me in the right direction as to what to look for to resolve this issue? I would like to use the boat instead of just sinking money into it only to never get to use it.

Please email me at stephen.dudra@fnf.com with any and all replies please. If you would like to speak to me, I will be more than happy to provide a phone number to contact me at.

Thanks,

Stephen

Sorry Stephen, normally iboats members dont email replies, we post replies for everyone to see so that others can benefit.

How does the motor run?

If the motor runs OK but the guages are not operating then maybee the instrument loom got dislodged during the repair. If you look at the back of the tacho there should be 12 Volts going to the purple wire using the black wire on the tacho for earth.
If no voltage here then trace the loom back and you may find a loose plug.

I agree, follow whaley's advice. What's the voltage at the batteries when the engine is running? At idle it should be at least 13+ volts
Check the connects at the rectifier and test the rectifier. If the rectifier is bad the tach won't work and your battery will not charge.

A fully charged battery, without engine running, is 12.6-12.8 volts.

Thanks to all that replied. I called the mechanic that fixed it and he instructed me to do a quick test for him before bringing it back. I ran a new ground wire from one of the batteries to the power connections in the center console and that seemed to fix the problem.

So thanks to Andy and Whaley for responding!
