Inline 6 just pops a little - won't start

Finally have my boat mostly put together. I have a newly rebuilt '72 1400 powerhead with mostly '74 1500 parts. I just rebuilt the carbs completely. I timed it to 21* today and synced the carbs. Try to start it, it just puts a little, smokes a little, but won't start.

Anyone know why?

How far should the butterflys open with the idle-throttle lever? Mine only open a tiny bit.

Did you have the flywheel apart, it sounds like the flex plate is not lined up right

Not smart enough for pictures, just put a screwdriver in number 1 cyl and roll it up to TDC and ck your timing mark on the flywheel---Bob

Do you mean, as in, my timing isn't actually at 21*? Yes, I did take it apart, but I'm pretty certain it's back together correctly.

ZmOz, just ck it with a screwdriver, you wouldn't be the first and for sure not the last to get one a hole off--Bob

As long as thats right the only thing that comes to mind is that the plugs could be loaded with assm lube

All the plugs are clean and fire nicely.

Throttle cable should not be connected till it's fired up and idle is setup. Then fast idle lever is not in play. You can run the throttle arm by hand with someone cranking to help it kick off.

-W

Tried it. Makes no difference. Even tried it at WOT, nothing.

Hi Zm, Loosen the locknut and adjust the full throttle stop screw to allow the throttle shutter to fully open at wot.

the throttle shutter could be acting as a throttle stop.

check the clearance with a guage, i don't know what it is for your motor, then tighten the lock nut to hold your adjustment.

I'm wondering if this problem could be something electrical.

Did that, carbs are fully open at WOT. I don't think it's anything electrical, since it sparks fine...and that's really the only electrical thing on the motor.

Sounds like you may have the plug wires not in order. Find #1 recheck your firing order, Lets hope that is your problem. Tim

Ok if they are in order is #1 at tdc on #1 at the cap. If so everything is in time. It is also easy to be off one. Tim

Re: Inline 6 just pops a little - won't start

Pull # 1 plug bump starter untill at TDC. Then check time marks at flywheel at TDC. Then pull distributor cap and make sure rotor is pointing at #1 plug wire. If not pull all plug wires and start with #1 and set proper firing order....
That should fire it up . Then do a link-n-synk see clams post. Hope that all it takes. Tim

After all those timing checks, have you tried squirting a little gas in the carbs?

ED
