Hey gang - just picked up this 3 cylinder which had been sitting for 4 years and was full of old gas.

I put in 3 carb kits and all jets are clean as well as new gas. I cleaned the fuel line from the tank and dipped the carbs. It starts on first crank but will idle on 1/4 choke only. Under load I have to play with the choke to keep it going.

I have no manual and am going to try to set-up the carbs. My question is, are all the carbs set-up the same way? Any tips for setting up the triple (do I have to set them up under load?, do I start with the bottom and work to the top?)

Could it be something else?

Any help is appreciated (big fishing trip this weekend).

Thanks, Mike.

model number please, I don't know of any 25hp 3 cyl. jonny-rudes, but then I don't know every model.
I am however familiar with 3 cyl. models, and yes the are all set the same. If you have to use the choke to make it run, you still haven't gotten the carbs (or one of them) clean The 97's should not have a choke, just a primer, if you need to prime it to run, it's not getting enough fuel. Plugged low speed circuit is probably the problem. You may also need to do a link and sync to make sure that all 3 carbs are opening together and that the timing is correct. The 3 cyls are picky about that. Use the read search button and search for link and sync for a good explaination on how to do that. Once again, experts will be along soon to help out

jim is right. You probably still junk in a carb. When you use the search feature Joe Reeves has an excellent description on how to set the carbs but it still won't work if they are not clean. Soak them overnight and blow out all the passages with air. I'm not positive but I don't believe there is any adjustment on these carbs, I think they are preset. Also like jim said, I don't know of a 3 cylinder 25hp either. Might need a link n sync after you get them clean. One thing jim did miss was Welcome to iboats".

With a GOOD pair of insulated pliers and the engine running pull a plug wire. If the rpms drop and engine cuts out that plug was getting spark. If there is no change in the engine's performance then you are not getting fire to that cylinder. At that point suspect a bad coil, plug wire, plug, etc...

Fireman - did just that - spark is okay.

took the carbs out again and cleaned them up... seemed to get lots more gunk in them.

took the motor out and she ran just fine - but now there is no top end... possibly a problem with the fuel tank - looks like it's missing a diaphragm.... will idle down to a chop and has lots of stuff on the lower end... hopefully a new tank will fix the problem.

dmike, we all learn something everyday and I looked up your model number and I'll be darned if it isn't a three cylinder 25. When you say seemed to het lots more gunk in them do you mean that the carbs were dirty again? Also what do you mean by lots of stuff on the lower end? Sounds like you may have crap in your tank that is getting picked up and sent into your engine. Clean the tank good. I assume that you are talking about a six gallon tank. Some guys get a big handful of nuts and small bolts with about a gallon of gas and shake it good then dump the crud.

If you have no top end pump the primer bulb when it does this and see if it picks up. You may still have crap in the high speed jet or the fuel pump could be weak. I would suspect stuff in the high speed jet.
