Now, a day before i was going to leave a deposit on my 1765 I'm having second thoughts on if I should just buy the 1780.

Let me get you up to speed
Just before i sold my 16 foot Glasstron-Carlson CV-16 I mounted a 04 Yamaha 25 hp 20" 4 stroke tiller on it and went for a test ride. If memory serves it pushed around 25-26 mph on my GPS and didnt take too much to get on plane, about 14 mph. That hull was around 900lbs and had a really deep v and was very bow light.

That taken into consideration, the 1765 and the 1780 both are lighter and are both Flat bottom. One is 65" at the beam marked from the chines the other is 80". They weigh 750 and 800lbs respectably. being that they are flat bottom they should get on plane at a very low speed. I'm wondering if anyone thinks there would be an issue with pushing 3 people at 600 lbs total with the 1765 or 1780 hull and motor with only a bench in the boat, no console or front deck so they might even be lighter then 750-800 lbs.

Fuel economy and light weight are king as i will be using this boat in the Delaware chasing stripers in 1-3 foot of water over rocks.

It will also serve as my bay and inlet boat, with the occasional trip outside

gunnel height is around 32" for the 1765 and 35" for the 1780

I personally don't like the 1780 but have owned the 1765 in the past before they went DLX. I am considering buying either the 1655 or 1765 and putting a four stroke 25 Honda on it. I had a 40 2 stroke on the 1765 I had and it would fly. On the 1655 I had a 25 merc and it did quite well too. One day I had 1200 pounds of bait and myself and it would still plane in shallow water. I've had friends that had the 1765 with 25 2 strokes and made out ok with the power and they probably carried more weigh than you're looking at. The extra width on the 1780 would make the boat carry more weight but I think you would be sacrficing turning personally. Good luck and keep in mind those boats will slide in a heartbeat. They don't have the reverse chine like the Southern Skimmer has so watch those high speed turns.

I may be too late but I just joined the site. I have a 1965 with a 50 hp and I feel that it is a bit underpowered. It goes about 22 mph at 5000 rpms. I used to have a 75 hp and that moved the boat much better. I think a 25 hp in either of those hulls is pretty small. You may want to consider selling that engine and getting at least a 50 hp.

As far as taking the boat ito the ocean, the 1780 will be much harder to capsize, although neither are really ocean boats. I have had mine about 5 miles out but every swell makes me nervous. I think the extra width of a 1780 would make it feel much more stable in the swells. Let us know what you decide.
