Welcome to the forum!

I would suspect that your motor needs a link & sync. adjustmen done on it.

If you have an OEM manual for it, Its fairly easy to do. Without one you will need to have it done at a marine shop.

Link & sync. means setting the throttel and timeing togather so that one dosent get ahead of the other. Either one out of adj. will kill engine at idel when trying to shift into gear.

Idel speed should be set at 750 RPMS in the water. Should idel at about 900 or so on the muffs.

You need a manual real bad!....Take em kids fishin soon as possible....Grin!

Good luck!

Re: 70hp evinrude runs good til put in gear

I've tried multiple times to set the link and sync the way the manual states with the throttle plates starting to move with the advance. What I've found each time I've done this is that I ended up with the very problem you have. Always ended up setting the cam follower back to being about 1/32" away from the cam where it was when I bought the motor. Motor always runs great with full power then with solid consistent response through the entire throttle range. My boat mechanic friend told me that this has been his experience as well. BTW, when you get it working in forward, make sure to test also going into reverse. Just my personal experience.
