Hi All,
I got a new boat some time back; it has a 1975 70hp Evinrude three cylinder. I took it out 2 times and it ran great, but since then I have been searching your posts.

It has a bit of a problem you see, there is water getting into the engine some how.

Now, through suggestion in the posts I have tried these parts:
• A new head gasket
• A new exhaust gasket (only one of the three though)
• Power head gasket
• New thermostat
• Replaced the coils (big crack under one of them)
• Carburetor kits (I thought the water was gas)
• 2 little valves under the thermostat housing (the ones at the end of the springs) they were melted.
I have:
• Had the head off, I checked the cylinders carefully for cracks.
• Had the exhaust manifold off, no cracks.
• Checked the impeller, it’s all good.
• Pulled off the crank seal; there is water in the crank.
• Taken the exhaust manifold apart, it looks just fine. It does have some high spots when checked with a straight edge.

Now because I am a man with little hair as it is, I hope some one some where can help me out. I will be on holidays shortly, and have planned my two weeks off around salmon fishing…… in my boat.

My power head is off again and sitting on my workbench.

Any help is appreciated.
Brad

something is warped, head, exhaust housing, or you have a crack in the water jacket.

Are your plugs fouling out? What cylinder is it effecting?

when you have things melting it says you had an extreme overheat. the crack in the coil was probably from that also

Hi Blueclaw,
All three cylinders are wet, but especially the bottom one.

I did the “glass trick” when reinstalling the head. It seems okay. It has been over heated, you can tell because those little plugs were melted under the thermostat housing.

When placing a straight edge along my exhaust manifold, it may be a bit warped, but not a lot.

If the water jacket were cracked, where would it crack? I have looked at all the water passages I could see. Is there more on the starboard side of the engine internally? Like I say, I looked at the cylinders carefully.

The intake side of the crankcase uses air to keep it cool.

When you pulled the head did you remove the water jacket on top of the head and check the head area?

when you have a melt down like you had it's hard to say where it could be leaking from. You must of been running bone dry to melt the rubber. In order to get in all the pistons the exhaust side seems more likely.

I'd think you should go back to the exhaust manifold and pull it all the way apart and replace anything that is warped and all new gaskets

Okay,
Thanks, I have a friend that says he may have some used stuff around.

I did not pull the water jacket off of the head. I will do it now. When I put it back on will I need to torque it down? If so to that ft lbs?

Also do I torque the exhaust down? If so to what ft lbs?

If the block were cracked what would the crack look like? Would it be really really hard to see?

I appreciate the help.
Thanks.
