'64 Ev 9.5 won't go into forward

A while ago I posted that my driveshaft was stuck in the powerhead of my Evinrude 9.5. Well I soaked it, and soaked it and to no avail. I decided to try to put it back togetherby lining up the shaft key with the impeller slot and put it back together without getting the shaft out.<br /><br />Well I was successful in getting the LU back on the motor and aligning the impeller notch with the shaft key and can bolt the two halves back together.<br /><br />Now my problem.. I cannot shift into forward. I can shift into neutral and reverse, but not forward. Any ideas on what might have happened as I put the driveshaft back into the LU and what might I do to get forward gear back?<br /><br />thanks..

Any help on this?? I finally had time to go back and look at this thing. I split the LU again and confirmed that I can shift the LU into R-N-F. I also examined the shift linkage to ensure it has full travel.<br /><br />It is only when I have the two connected that I cannot get it to shift. I have tried adjusting the lever on the linkage and it does not help.<br /><br />My boys really want me to get this thing going and I am so close. Any help would be great..

Are you absolutely, 100% certain that both bolts in the shift rod connector are going through the notched out section on both shift shafts?<br />I try to always get a flashlight out and check through the bolt holes. "Once bitten" as they say.

should I be able to see the notch in the shift shaft or should the notch somehow be all the way in the connector?

This might clear things up a bit for ya. The bolts go thru the connector at the holes shown. The bottom shaft, and bolts are not shown.<br /><br />

Thanks for the pic. I must not have the shaft inserted far enough. I'll give this a try..

I went out and gave it a shot and that was the ticket. I am now getting f-n-r. Thanks both of you for this guidance. I can now get this thing fired up and ready to roll..
