They might. Do you have both motors? If so, look at the lower units. Take the props off & see how the bearing housing is held in place. One method to hold in place is two small metal tabs and bolts and the other is a big retaining ring. If the lower units are the same chances are you can swap powerheads. Another way is to remove the lower units and look at the shift rod & drive shaft. IF they are different it won't work.

if the lower units are different you can't swap(motor & drive shaft splines are different). I just went thru this with an 1980-50hp & 1989-50hp and that is what i found out.

Hopefully you can do the swap, I couldn't & bought a rebuilt lower unit.
Those should swap. The head is different on the 1990 and may not fit under a 1985 hood. If so just swap the heads. The lower seal plate may be different but you should be able to use it. If not, swap it.
Thanks. Yes, I have both motors and originally wanted to switch shaft lengths(the 85 is long, 90 short) but was told that would be a lot of work, cutting/extending the water tube, etc. The 1990 head fits under the 1985 hood and vice versa. I'll let you know how it goes.

john
