Any ideas on what would be causing this problem? The motor starts, usually, on the first pull and idles fine. In nuetral I can give it full throttle and it runs fine. When I put it in gear and give it throttle it will give me about 50% power for the most part. Sometimes it will pick up and go for a few seconds as if there were no problem but that happens seldom.

Experts please let me know what you think. Keep in mind that I have no experience with this so please use small words and be as specific as possible (Outboards for Dummies) for me...

Welcome aboard iboats Looka..!

Something for ya' to try. Get a spray bottle and put some premix fuel in it. Put the boat in the water and take off. Go to full throttle and if she don't come up to speed, give the carb throat a shot of premix. If she picks up, chances are your carb needs a good cleaning and overhaul.

You have a high speed jet that is probably plugged with some junk in the float bowl.

Let us know what you find out.

Hi Looka,
Sounds to me like you've got a coil breaking down, or perhaps a bad powerpack. The "sometimes it will pick up and go" line is the clincher. First thing I would do is just double check the grounds on the coils and powerpack. Look for any cracks in the coils. If you run it at night with the hood off, you might see one of the coils arcing out to the block.
With the motor off, remove one of the plug wires from the plug and ground it to the block. Attempt to start the motor. If it starts like normal, then the coil you disconnected is the bad one, or at the very least it's the cylinder that's not firing. If it won't start at all, then you disconnected the one that was working, and the one still connected is the bad one. You might be able to swap the coils and note whether the problem follows the coil. If so, then it's definitely the coil. New ones aren't terribly expensive...

- Scott
