I have been looking at a motor that has been sitting for a long time and was curious if 'fogging' the cylinders with oil will give false compression readings and if it does would that false reading be equal across all cylinders? I have been looking at an older motor as that all the pocketbook can handle but I would like to check the compression 1st. but since it has been sitting I was thinking that spraying some oil in the cylinders would help prevent scarring???? any thoughts?

Hi fishkiller<br />Certainly oiling the Cylinders will raise compression. It will also pump your compression gauge full of oil as well. If you feel this motor needs some lube before you roll it over, squirt some mixed fuel down the carb (s) and in the spark holes. Disable the ignition so you have no spark. Roll the engine over at full open throtle, enough to clear the fuel. Then conduct your test. You don't say what motor your interested in, My guess is that you will need to throw another 2-3 hundred bucks into it, if it's in good shape. This would be just for general maint. items and labor.

Don't buy anything from anybody without hearing it run and shift properly, in less your buying at scrap prices. We see alot of the, "it use to run great" engines and the long looks way to often
