Hi, I have a 1974 50HP Evinrude. On my outboard, there is a arm the connects between the body of the outboard and what appears to be the steering rod (I know bugger all about outboards, so I don't know the name). I have noticed a lot of rust appearing underneath the paint, and it's the only part of the outboard that is like that. I was wondering if anyone had any ideas on how to get rid of this rust and get it looking like new again?<br /><br />Ok, here's the link to the picture:<br /><br /> Boat Pic <br /><br />Any help would be great.

I would suggest pulling it off the motor, getting it sand blasted and then powder coated. The color may not be exactly the same, but it should last for a long time. In the meantime, I'd spray it with some wd40 or lanogaurd to stop the rust getting any worse.

Yeah....like lark said, best way is to pull it off and do it right. This part is cast and is prone to rust if the paint gets chipped off. Would be a good winter project if you guys down under have a winter...... :D

If looks are important to you by all means go for it. The rust won't hurt anything though. I been runnin outboards in salt water for over 30 years and never seen one of those fail. Most motors in south florida have nothing but exposed rust on what I think is called the tiller arm.

I am with Solittle. This is one of them deals where the cure is worse than the problem. You wii have to disassemble your entire outboard down to major componates in order to powder coat that part. Let it rust, won't hurt a thing.

I only suggested the powdercoating because Oggabogga said he wanted it to look like new.<br /><br />I also said that he should just spray with wd40 or similar to stop it rusting any further. <br />At the end of the day it is up to him to decide what he wants to do.
