The top cylinder on my '77 Johnson 25hp motor is not firing. Spark plugs have been replaced with no improvement. I suspect either the coil or the power pack is bad. Is there any way to tell whether one or the other is bad without professional electronic equipment? If so, how easy are they to replace?

You could switch coils from a firing cylinder with the dead cylinder. If the "dead" comes "alive" you've found a bad coil.
Backlash

Thanks for the reply, Backlash!

That's something I just thought about. I was about to just cross the plug wires but realized that the timing would be completely backwards. Do you happen to know if the coil connections are plugs, or are they usually hard-wired? (Don't have the motor here in front of me.)

I've seen them both ways. Can't say for sure what your '77 has but I believe the plug wire is integral to the coil and the wire to the primary winding is a bayonet type connection. Should be an easy switch.
Backlash
