I have a 68 evinrude 55hp hydro-electric shift motor. when I got it I changed the oil in the lower unit it was very dirty. It runs good for about 30 to 40 min. Then the motor speed up and the boat slows way down. It sound like it kick out of forward. When I slow down to around idle it sound like it kicks back in. I was told I could clean the lower unit by running diesel fuel in it for a few min. Is this a good ideal. Or is there anther problem?

Hello.
It does not seem a very good idea to run that engine with diesel in the lower unit.Try to just change the lower unit oil with C-type lower unit oil. Run it a while, drain it, and change it again with C-type lower unit oil. That should clean your lower unit.If you still have problems of it slowing down ,it is time to check if you spun the hub on your prop,or a lower unit overhaul.

If I spun the hub on the prop. Would it work fine for about 30 to 40 min. an then start slipping.

You could have weak solenoids in the gearcase...or the pump is dirty..I am not sure about running any kind of cleaning solution through it as there is rubber and plastic on the pump.

TMD

The spun hub was wishful thinking.

If the manual says to take out 1 ounce then I would probably listen to it. Fill it back up take out 1 ounce and see how it performs.

I have a '66 80hp elec shift and I can relate to your problems. I,d say from what happened to mine several times is that one of the springs in the gearcase between the solinoid & gear has broke! Causes it to kick out and when you back off the throttle it can kick back in. Probably the front spring- thats forward. LOL
