My 1990 evinrude 120 overheats. The last few runs, I noticed that I had covered the same distance or running time when the alarm (horn) went off (between 4000 and 4500rpm, 20 minutes). I've searched throughout the forum, and I find it difficult to pin-point the problem. Is it the thermostats, water pump, impellor...all of the above??
Any suggestions on where I should start?

If you do not know when the impeller was last replaced, you're due. That's a good place to start.

About the only other components in the system are thermostats and relief valves.

Thanks for the suggestion. The foot did drag the bottom a few times. It may have sucked in some sand. I believe that may have damaged the impeller. What do you think? My Evinrude mechanic seems to think it's the water pump, but hasn't checked it yet. I would just like to avoid any extra costs...

That'll do it.Replace the entire pump assy when you change waterpump. If the impeller cup and plate is grooved it will prematurely wear the new impeller out ,not to mention it won't pump full capacity.

Hi, I would check those thermostats also if you use the boat in Salt water. You did not specify if your water pump was pumping or not. I have an 84 115 Johnson and I had one thermostat hanging up and the port head would get hot at 3000 rpms and higher. Those suckers were so corroded that they looked like salt rock formations. My Water pump was pumping great, but she still got hot because of no circulation thru the Port head. Its a great idea to install a Water pump kit.Let us know how you make out with it.

Thanks for your suggestions everyone. Turns out my outboard needs an impeller kit.
