Hi,

Just rebuild carb on the old pull rope outboard and I am trying to get it started. Almost there but I am tired of pulling on that rope. Can I use an electrical drill with a socket that will fit the flywheel nut. Can I damage something? Will it affect the flywheel torque?

I have thought of this many times before. never tried it yet :) My thought was if you find a socket a little bigger but wouldnt slip it would be easier to pull it back off after it starts. it would be dangerous to say the least. good luck and if you try it I hope you come away with all your fingers and both eyes in place and functioning.

Don't use the socket...suck it up and get some exercise...or use your charms to get someone else to pull the rope...I bet you could find some kids that you could bribe with a soda...just a thought
anything left on the flywheel will be shrapnel when it starts...including you... :)

I do it for small outboards all the time, but I ought to wear a crash helment. I've been beaned by the socket at least once that I remember. :)

Fix the problem before pulling your guts out. It never solves anything.

Thank you everyone. I thought it would be a dangerous proposition given the fact that it is a 20HP. I will settle for the exercise or see if I can bribe some big guys with a frosty one.... :p

Re: Tired of pulling rope

I am sorry to dissapoint you, but if everything is like it should, these starts in 2 - 3 pulls. somehow you must have overlooked something. I had 3 of theese motors, a 73, a 81 and a 84 and I always thought the only electric start would give me was harness and a battery to mess with too. It was always 2 sometimes 3 pulls, and then off.

Re: Tired of pulling rope

dont do it there is a torque on that center nut. u risk stripping the threads on it if u do that by over tightening it you might as well junk the motor if that happends. find out why it wont start like the guys said it should start in 3-4 pulls if it dont then there is other problems
