    Joe Reeves WOT timing Q, 1975, 50hp

I read in the FAQ "The reasoning for the 4? difference is that when the engine is actually running, due to the nature of the solid state ignition componets, the engine gains the extra 4?." Does this pertain to the '75 CDI system? My timing would then be 14-16 degrees, right? Spec.'s call...

    Bellows Q's

You folks have provided me with answer you can't find in the manual, for that I say thanks. Well I got a few more.... I'm realitively new to I/O's. I have a '72 3.0L Merc. When I first put the boat in the water I started her several times with the drive up and the R's at 1-2K before saying...

    3.0L, pre-Alpha drive Q's

I discovered today as my wife was raising the drive, that a good quart or so of water drained out from the transom at the back of the engine, obviously not a good thing. My primary question is this: Can the repair of this be put off 'till fall if I grease the thing more often? I just greased...

    New engine size, new prop?

I have a '72, 21 foot, 2200lb. (empty), Starcraft Islander that had a 2.5, which I replaced with a newer 3.0L. With 3-4 fishermen, this thing should have what prop size? The WOT is at least 5000 when I tested it on the water. (console tach max. readable is 5K) I have a 14 by 19 prop now...

    Linkage problem

I just put in a newer 3.0L Merc. into my '72 Starcraft, greased up the fittings in the outdrive and reattached it. I have the older R drive with the lift ring, anyway it shifted fine in the driveway with the muffs. Then I lifted the drive, drove 3 miles to marina launch, put it in the water...

    The last 3/4 inch

I have an R drive '72 3.0L Merc Starcraft. I am replacing the engine with one from a donor boat '74 that hit a rock (engine with low hrs.). The front plywood that the front motor mount rested against was rotten so I replaced it with oak. I realigned the the motor and now that I am trying to...

    Quick Q

Anybody know fer sure if a '84-85 3.0 vintage starter'll fit same engine '74? It looks like the gear is the same, but the starter motor case is smaller and has only 2 bolts for mounting it. I'm thinking if it does interchange i'd make a rear bracket for it. Thanks:)

    No. 1 intake oily, 120hp 2.5L 4cyl.

Some of you have been in the past a great resource for this dumb shadetree. I've posted before regarding backfire through the carb. Checked all the electrical, I'm now on the fuel side, I had an obvious manifold leak(exhaust) so I thought it could be the source. I've got the manifold off, the...

    Which seal?

I just bought a "new" '01 LS 9.9 Merc. that seemed to have been only wet once. I took it home put it on the old boat ran it for 3hrs., brought it home and :( I see some brown water/oil goo drippin' from the prop shaft. Which seal is likely to be bad the prop shaft or the drive shaft? This...

    Backfire '72 120 Merc.

Lately I've been trying to chase down the source of a fairly frequent backfire through the carb and more frequent popping through the exhaust. The electrical looks good, I'm drawing fresh fuel from a new tank. However, I have found that the exhaust manifold leaks just above the 3rd mounting...

    Power to weight

I'm just wondering if anyone has seen any figures or graphs in print about how much the weight per hp has gone down over the years, or if it has trended down to some time and stopped/slowed. I'm thinking of replacing an old '72 Ev. 50hp with a newer one and looking for the most hp I can afford...

    Another Outdrive question

I have a pre-alpha '72 drive, I noticed today if I forget to lower the drive before I shift it will not shift out of neutral, why is that? And am I doing some damage to the lower unit or cable? I had to return home instead of going out, but after the vibration on the road home and some failed...

    GM 120 engine block change

I'm thinking of buying a 1965 Larson stored in a garage for 15 years just for the engine which looks like it is the same block as my well worn '72 120. Can anybody tell with certainty if the blocks changed any durring this time period? Or will it bolt right up? The Larson is bolted to an OMC...

    New Block 120/140

Where's the best price on a new block for my soon to be retired '72 120. Which is more efficient for an old 21' starcraft islander 120, or 140hp. Can a new/reman. block just bolt up to a pre-alpha drive?
