    Force 85 hp 1989 - Water in cylinder 3.

Hi. About a year ago i got a good offer on a Force 85 hp that the owner gave up on, finally had some time to dig into it, and got it started after replacing a burned out starter, but it only runs on the top two cylinders, number 3 in the bottom is taking on water, and steam cleaning the plug...

Alpha One Gen II stripped upper gears.

Hi. I am trying to help a friend diagnosing his Alpha one outdrive, boat lost all propulsion on the last trip out. Took it apart today, and found both upper gears to be totally destroyed, and the bellow was full of a mix of water and gear oil, what can have caused this failure ? Bad seals on...

Johnson 50 HP SPL 1997 - Weak Spark / No Spark

Hi everyone, i got the task of trying to diagnose an non starting Johnson 50 SPL for a friend. First a bit of a story on the engine. He just had it reparied at a local marine shop, they changed the powerpack, and did a few other things to the boat, he took the boat out, it sailed perfectly...

Mercury 500 Thunderbolt - Sat for a very long time.

Finally some time to work on the engine, got the lower leg off, no problems in that, also got the shiftshaft seal changed. That was the good news, the bad news is that the driveshaft is pretty pitted from rust, not sure if new seals are going to change anything if installed directly. I did...

Mercury 500 Thunderbolt - Sat for a very long time.

Hi Merc850. I was thinking about removing the powerhead, but i fear that most of the bolts are going to snap - since the engine lived its life in saltwater, but i am planing on keeping a small electric outboard in the boat in case of an emergency. The boat came with a wire steering system, so...

Mercury 500 Thunderbolt - Sat for a very long time.

I hope so, but everything is good so far, will clean the engine before it goes on the boat, there is a few spots that could use a bit of paint anyway. :) Still can't belive that engine started right up. Just got home with the boat for the engine, decided on a 15 foot speedboat.

Mercury 500 Thunderbolt - Sat for a very long time.

Little bit of an update, had some time to work on the engine today. First of, the steering is 100% free, nice and smooth, it took some drastic measures, had to drill and tap for a zerk fitting in the top of the steering swivel, looks like its with brass bearings/sleves. Also had a look into...

Mercury 500 Thunderbolt - Sat for a very long time.

Pictures, i see oil became pretty black, so it looks like only the first part was water.

Mercury 500 Thunderbolt - Sat for a very long time.

Hi guys, new user here. :) Been looking into buying my very first boat, and of cause an outboard engine to go with it, i finally decided on a Mercury 500 outboard, and got one very cheap - but it has not been run since sometime in the 90's. A little history on the engine: 1 owner since new...
