Oil leak out propellar - unburnt 2 stroke but running smooth?

Hi all, On my 2000 oceanpro 130hp- So I recently changed gear oil so was concerned to see an oil patch (thick dark oil trickle not residue) out the propellar exhaust after running on muffs. I'm almost certain it's not gear oil, it's black and not smelly. The motor is running sweet from cold...

Remove lower mount bracket to clear/clean shift rod 'housing'

Is it a 'good' idea to attempt to remove the lower mount bracket (circled in Red) to try and clear out the 'shift rod/steering housing tube' and to possibly replace the rubber part circled in blue (see second photo) as mine appears worn/loose/perished. That said I note this part (second photo)...

Gasket sealing compound - how to remove with ease?

After replacing the gasket seals a year or so ago, I need to remove it again (shift rod cover). This time its stuck real hard.... Any ideas how to chemically/thermally dissolve/loosen? Tried a light tap with a mallet to 'break' the seal to no avail.. Thanks in advance!

Shift rod becomes stiff due to swollen/corroded O rings at gear case!

From googling I think is relatively common issue but not every 2 years! Any thoughts on what causes this or how to avoid/prolong the life? My thoughts are: O-ring having a chemical reaction with some applied product rather than just salt water? E.g. gear oil volatile vapours/fumes as this sits...

Cylinder head bolts - to replace or leave alone (rusted bolt head)

So I noticed in my general maintenance that there is some surface rust on the heads of some of the cylinder head bolts. Motor running sweet and is 17 years old.... For now I have degreased/cleaned and applied Johnson anti corrosion (waxy) spray.... Looks like they originally have some black...

Trailer restoration complete - my learnings for others!

Hi all, So I have recently completed a trailer restoration (see photos below - had holes to restored :)) - something I found help through this and other forums and hope I can pass on the learning. These are just my findings and suggestions from someone who spent far too long restoring a...

weight on wobble rollers instead of keel rollers a problem?

Hi all, So I noticed that my 20 year old trailer which the manufacture still makes and suggests for my hull (Buccaneer 510) appears to have 90% of the weight on two sets of quad wobble rollers at the rear or the boat. The two mid quad rollers and two front dual rollers have very little weight...

Top coat or corrosion spray over cold galv?

Hi all, Recently sanded back and painting trailer with high zinc cold galv paint. Just wondering if anyone has knowledge or experience with possible top coats? Datasheet mentions either Acrylic latex or chlorinated rubber top coats - recon they would apply to a boat trailer? Other option is...

    treating trailer rust pitting

Hi all, so my trailer has a fair amount of rust on it in sections. I used sanding/grinding discs on angle grinder to get the majority of. There are many tiny (say 1mm) pittings left. To remove these will require a LOT of grinding and material loss. I fear for using zinc spray( cold galv) as...

    noobie fiberglass repair questions

Hi all, So looking to do some fiberglass repair on the boat over the off-season. Just had a few hopefully quick answer questions that will hopefully help many people: Structural or cosmetic - other than common sense to the size of damage and wood staining visible are there any other damaged...

Trailer regalve (angle grinder instead of sandblasting?)

So over winter I am looking to regalv the trailer as its in bad nick. Any reason (other than time and effort which I have) you can't/shouldnt angle grind the old coating off instead of paying more to sandblast than the regalve? If nothing else it will reduce the amount of sand blasting required...

Gelcoat hull polish/sand/buff/wax how far to go?

So my hull has a faded/chalky appearance and a few stains (nothing large). The majority of the hull is white gelcoat and so doesn't look faded but just a little chalky. For this reason is much polishing etc needed or would a waxing bring back the shiny coating? As for the faded light blue areas...

Fuel and vent lines flooding when filling

Hi all, I am fairly new to boating and have been having issues when fulling my fuel tank. When I first filled the tank fuel flooded out what I thought was the filling line. The second time I filled more slowly I realized actually it was flooding out the vent line (perhaps it was the filling...

Trim tab not suffice to counter-act prop torque - steering too loose?

So I have fully adjusted my trim tab above the prop as far as it will go and while it helps the pull to port (Edit - I meant starboard sorry!), it hasn't removed it - you certainly wouldn't want to let go of the wheel at speed! Two questions - Iis there a steering stiffness adjustment to deal...

compression test - fuel and ignition neccisary to disconnect ?

Hi all, So I read the FAQ on compression test and I read my official Johnson service manual. The manual doesn't mention any funky means to override ignition or disconnect fuel and it also mentions set to WOT. So which is right- perhaps the service manual is skimp on detail and assumes these...

OMC/Johnson remote Control Box cable (gear/throttle) alignment or lubrication problem

Parts: 1 is the restance adjust screw - basically pushes metal lever into wheel to add resistance 2 is the shift cable gear - teeth onto the main wheel 3 is a (apparently loose) pin to the end of the cable, cable mostly held in place by the black tab further down the line. 4 is an electronic...

OMC/Johnson remote Control Box cable (gear/throttle) alignment or lubrication problem

Hi all, So the end symptom I have is that my reverse does not engage properly but please reason my explanation: see the attached photo: Firstly my assumption: When the shifter handle is moved forward from neutral at the first dashed line the squeeze button pops out. Here the motors gear...
