My 1973 85hp is giving me a little problem. I can not maintain constant rpms between 2000 and 3000 rpms. If I set the throttle to run between 2000 and 2500 it will drop back to 2000 and if I set it anywhere between 2500 and 3000 it will run up to 3000. Maintains rpms anywhere below...

Try having someone rotate the flywheel a little by hand as you try to push it on. This will help the splines align. If the lower unit is in gear, you can also turn the prop.
On the top rear of the block of my '73 Merc850 IL4 there is a quarter size flat disk loosly but securely mounted in a horizontal position and held by a side bolt. It's behind the flywheel and right above #1 cyl. Is this a water pressure relief valve or what? :confused: Can't find it...
